Fugitives Offered Safe Surrender

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Fugitives in Wayne County wanted for non-violent crimes will be able to turn themselves in with a special program at Second Ebenezer Church June 4th through the 7th.  It's called Fugitive Safe Surrender.

U.S. Marshall Bob Grubbs said it's not an amnesty program, but those who surrender will receive favorable consideration. "We will not present this program again in this region. Take this opportunity. Come down. Change your lives," he said.

"I know that there's a lot of people out there that have been running, been hiding, a long time -- looking for a way to get their lives back on track."

Attorneys and counselors will be at the church to help those who may need drug and job counseling.  Local, state and federal authorities say when non-violent offenders turn themselves in, it allows police to focus their resources on more dangerous criminals such as murderers and rapists. Violent offenders may also turn themselves in, but may not be released the same day.

Authorities say there are nearly 30,000 people wanted in felony warrants in Wayne County.

Second Ebenezer Church, 14601 Dequindre Road, at the I-75 and McNichols Exit, in Detroit. Hours of operation will be 9a.m. to 5p.m.  on June 4-7/
