Campus Martius Park, Detroit's gathering place, is to the July 25, 2008 4th Fridays with Ford, a full day of great entertainment, music, activities, food, drink and downtown specials that truly has something for everyone. The FREE events begin at 11:30 AM and run nonstop until midnight. Ford Motor Company will also have a vehicle display and prize raffle.
The day kicks off with a performance by talented high school students from 15 area high schools, selected especially to participate in the 2008 "JazzWeek @ Wayne State University". There will also be guest conductors from the WSU Jazz Faculty. The 2008 DIJF All-Star Youth Ensemble to be announced at the concert's end.
Headlining the day’s concerts are The Bacon Brothers, performing from 8-9:30 PM, presented by Marketing Associates and 99.5 WYCD, Detroit’s Best Country. Guitarist/vocalist Kevin and his older brother Michael (guitar, vocals, cello) are lifelong musicians with a sound described as “forosoco” – an inside joke describing their style, which is a combination of folk, rock, soul and country. Kevin, the star of films such as Footloose, JFK and The Air I Breathe, and Emmy-winning film and television composer Michael, along with their four-piece Bacon Brothers Band, have released four studio albums and a live CD/DVD since forming in 1995. Their fifth album is due out in September.
Also presented by 99.5 WYCD, Detroit’s Best Country! is Grammy nominee Carlene Carter, performing from 10:30 PM-midnight. After a decade-long hiatus, the daughter of June Carter Cash and Carl Smith, and step-daughter of legendary Johnny Cash, Carlene freely straddles the line between rock and country with a unique blend of her daring personality, witty smile and talented, energetic performance. Her new CD, Stronger, is her third release to hit the Billboard charts.
The Friday Arts Market will focus on Art and Development, showcasing the work of Camille Pardo, the celebrated fine artist, clothing and furniture designer and chief designer in Ford Motor Company’s Living Legends Studio. Pardo has led the development and design of Ford’s timeless GT concept. The exhibition and demonstration provides a unique opportunity for the Detroit community to share in his creation of a new work of art. Pardo will be supported by artists and friends from his company “Art and Development.”
The Arts League of Michigan will host a student jazz band of exceptionally talented middle and high-school student musicians from the Artist Mentorship Program, performing from 2:00 P.M.-3:15 PM. The band is under the direction of Shahida Nurullah and Rodney Whitaker.
The 99.5 WYCD, Detroit’s Best Country Happy Hour will feature the Willie Nash Band, bringing their special brand of country, southern and classic rock to Campus Martius Park. The Willie Nash Band, headlined by local singer/guitarist Nash, tours statewide pursuing a lifetime of dreams come true.
Each 4th Friday, a different downtown district is highlighted. This Friday’s featured Downtown Spotlight District is COJO, the entertainment district surrounding Cobo Hall and Joe Louis Arena. Enjoy “4th Friday’s with Ford” $4 drink and food specials as the party continues until 2:00 A.M. Pick up your Spotlight District credentials from the Info Kiosk at the Park.
