Southfield-based DNA Dimensions said last week it has introduced DNA testing available in Metro Detroit for APOE, the gene associated with Alzheimer's disease.
More than 40 million Americans have a relative with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and one in eight people will develop the disease.
"Scientists believe, with the aging population, the number of people afflicted with Alzheimer's disease will quadruple by 2050," says Michael Pickett, owner of DNA Dimensions. "With a sample of a person's saliva, we can assess their risk so they can take preventive measures."
Pickett, an ex-Ford engineer, offers DNA testing services in Metro Detroit for paternity, ancestry, forensics, weight control, hair loss, drug response and now Alzheimer's.
Along with the test, DNA Dimensions includes an individualized report, a consultation with a board certified genetic counselor, and ongoing support to keep clients updated on the latest medical breakthroughs.
"New studies are coming out almost daily with helpful information on lowering your risk," said Pickett. "For example, recent studies have found that Statin medications may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease."
