Filmmakers Boot Camp Coming To Detroit

A workshop is planned next weekend at  Wayne State University to help aspiring filmmakers.

Speaking live on WWJ Saturday afternoon, NEHST Studios Chairman and Founder Larry Meistrich said his group will give a broad overview of the process of breaking into the movie business during the Aspiring Filmmakers Boot Camp  November 13-15.

The workshop, hosted by the Michigan Production Alliance, teaches attendees how to write, pitch, produce, cast, direct and sell a feature film.

"People tend to not talk about the business side of the film industry very often," Meistrich said.  "We really give people a broad overview from sort of sitting down and writing your idea through getting it made pre-production, production, post-production and then we actually teach people how to pitch their idea."

Meistrich says his group has actually bought ideas from the boot camps.

"We feel there are people outside of Manhatten and Beverly Hills who have some talent," he said.

Meistrich also said people don't need anything other than "guts" to pitch their story and idea.

"There was a time where Martin Scorsese hadn't made a movie too, so he had to pitch and he had to get to a position where somebody had to make his first project," Meistrich said.

Listen to the interview.

Meistrich has produced nearly 50 films, including critically acclaimed Oscar nominees, "You Can Count on Me," "Croupier," "Belly" and "Sling Blade."

The bootcamp costs $395.
