Detroit (WWJ/AP) -- A federal judge says text messages exchanged between high-ranking Detroit police and city officials must be released to a lawyer representing relatives of a stripper shot to death in 2003.
U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen made good on his April ruling that, according to the Detroit News, said unless he receives the "personal identification numbers" linking specific Detroit police and city officials to specific pagers, he would order SkyTel to release every pager text message for every Detroit city employee during the time period in question.
Rosen says attorney Norman Yatooma should be allowed to review the text messages as part of the evidence-gathering process in a lawsuit filed on behalf of the 15-year-old son of Tamara Greene.
The 27-year-old woman is thought to have danced at an unsubstantiated wild party at Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's official residence months before her death. The civil suit claims Kilpatrick, former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and other officials interfered in her murder investigation.
The Detroit Free Press says Rosen also wants to review the messages to determine if they're relevant to the suit.
