Detroit (WWJ) -- The ongoing FBI corruption investigation of some Detroit City Council members may work in Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's favor. One of the mayor's strongest opponents said that if allegations against some Council members turn out to be true – some Council members accepted bribes to approve a sludge-recycling contract – that those council members are compromised, and shouldn't proceed with the forfeiture hearings.
Detroit City Councilman Kwame Kenyatta said the Synagro investigation may force Council to remove Mayor Kilpatrick from office. “If it proves to be true, then you have council members who forfeited their office trying to put the mayor out of office who forfeited his office,” Kenyatta said.
Kenyatta stressed that this is if the FBI's investigation turns out to be true. The FBI reportedly has one council member on tape taking bribes from a Synagro representative. The bureau also reportedly has a council staff members accepting money.
Kenyatta said he was disappointed, and acknowledges this ongoing problem in Detroit.
“It was very disappointing. This whole thing is very disappointing for the city of Detroit. We have a serious problem in the city of Detroit as it relates to public officials. From the Mayor’s office, city council, the court system, the school board … it’s really bad right now,” Kenyatta said.
