As a parent, you can use your child’s art to build their literacy skills.
“What is it?” is a frustrating comment children often here when it comes to their art work. A more positive way of asking “What is it?” is to simply say, “Can you tell me something about this”? By doing this, you demonstrate that your interested in their piece without showing them you may not understand it.
Other positive practices when discussing your child’s artwork is to focus on their process. Statements such as “I like the way your colors swirl together,” or “What interesting shapes you have worked with” shows the child that you are interested in their art work without judging it.
Children’s art is an expression of who and what they are. As parents we need to value and encourage that.
