Ferris State students to hear from green building expert: Chris Comperchio, business leader for Trane's commercial business in Chicago and West Michigan, will speak to Ferris State University students today about how they can reduce the impact of buildings, the largest global warming culprit -- through green building and sustainability. Comperchio's presentation, "Green Building and Sustainability" will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in Whiting Turner Auditorium, room 102. He will discuss the state of green building in the United States today, available technologies and applications that can make green building a cost-effective reality, and ways that students, professors, building owners and others in the construction process can contribute to green building. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, buildings consume one-third of energy world-wide. Their environmental effect is greater than that of the transportation industry and industrial sectors. Green buildings use 20 to 30 percent less energy and require fewer natural resources than traditional construction. Comperchio will also unmask the myth that technology needs to catch up to make buildings green. He will discuss proven green technology options such as high-efficiency chilled water systems, district cooling/heating systems which deliver higher overall system efficiency for multiple building campuses or industrial settings, and geothermal heat pump systems which tap into energy from underground to enable year-round energy savings. While on campus, Comperchio will also meet with leaders from engineering student organizations, including the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), and International Facility Management Association (IFMA) to discuss the industry's future and alternative careers for engineering students as part of Trane's "Engineering Better Careers, Engineering Better Environments" program.
