Wayne State hosting neuroscience symposium: For its 39th annual meeting, the Michigan Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is focusing its attention on human cognition and perception, and how these functions deteriorate due to aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Wayne State University will host the meeting on Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on its main campus. The event will begin with breakfast and a poster session featuring current research in neurology, followed by two keynote speakers; Dr. Scott Moffat, assistant professor at Wayne State University’s Institute of Gerontology and Department of Psychology, and Dr. Charles J. Duffy, professor of neurology, neurobiology and anatomy, and ophthalmology at Rochester University’s Center for Visual Science. Both professors will present their research on the cognitive neuroscience of aging.The purpose of the society’s annual meeting is to share research, generate discussion and award outstanding research in neurology and its related fields. Participants include researchers and students at various levels of higher education as well as clinicians working in the field. Admission for the event is $25 for graduate and undergraduate students and $40 for researchers, technicians and the public. The event does require early registration; the deadline for both attendees and presenters is May 19.

CJPS to hold intellectual property seminar: Bloomfield Hills-based CJPS Enterprises LLC announced Tuesday that it will be holding a half-day mini-seminar and interactive discussions about building up, or divesting of, intellectual property for companies to increase their competitiveness, and therefore their worth. This seminar will take place in Detroit's TechTown on Friday June 6. Titled "Intellectual Property Creation, Licensing, and Management," the event covers basic concepts of intellectual property protection, growth strategies, as well as rationale and methods to identify and negotiate licensing agreements. The speaker, CJPS Enterprises CEO Christophe Sevrain, has more than 25 patents and 20 years' industry experience licensing technologies from research organizations such as universities, national laboratories and corporations, and selling and licensing patents out to large corporations. Although he is an entrepreneur, he held senior management positions at companies such as Baxter International and Delphi Corp. This seminar is one of a series of seminars that CJPS Enterprises was assigned by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. to offer to Michigan companies interested in learning about best business processes, as part of the Life Sciences Pipeline initiative. The project was created through the $2 billion 21st Century Jobs Fund to assist companies within or entering the healthcare sector. Compuware sets earnings call:Detroit-based Compuware Corp. (NASDAQ: CPWR) Tuesday announced that it will report final results for its fourth quarter and fiscal year, ended March 31, after the market closes Thursday, May 15. The company will also hold a conference call to discuss these results at 5 p.m. Eastern time May 15. To join the conference call, interested parties from the United States should call (800) 230-1074. Local nonprofit offers Saturday entrepreneur training: The Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute Inc. this week announced that a new accelerated seven-week Business Development Program, entitled “Weekend Warrior,” will be offered in beginning later this month. The program, sponsored by DEI and Fifth Third Bank, was designed by the Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute and is geared toward individuals seeking to start or expand their businesses. The training emphasizes interactive, applied learning activities that provide participants with real-world strategies they can apply to structure their businesses for profitability.  The seven-week training covers business fundamentals such as legal and insurance issues, to mastering customer service skills, improving business operations, financial analysis, and marketing. Automation Alley to host better biz roundtable: Automation Alley, Michigan’s largest technology business association, announced this week that its Technology Business Committee will welcome Josh Linkner, founder and CEO of Pleasant Ridge-based ePrize LLC, at its upcoming “Ideas for Impact: Bite Size Ideas for Better Business” Roundtable on Thursday, May 22.Linkner will speak to attendees on entrepreneurship and the key roles that innovation and passion play in the process. He has developed thousands of digital marketing strategies since the inception of ePrize in 1999.  Following the keynote presentation, attendees will break out into four distinct roundtables: finance, human resources and operations, IT, and marketing-sales.
