Engineering Firm Uses Twitter For Real-Time Data Updates

Waterford Township-based Kors Engineering, a service provider for manufacturing and industrial organizations, Tuesday announced the development of an extension for controls systems running the Tridium Niagara AX framework to report data status updates via Twitter.

Twitter is a short messaging service which limits text messages to 140 characters. The messages are called “tweets.”

Twitter allows users to report data updates to any data point within the Niagara AX software’s reporting capability. A user could arrange for a regular update of the power meter to determine the rate of facility or equipment usage, report run-time status and meters, air handling systems, temperature sensors, filters -- any data points that are monitored can be tracked from any device.

“Tracking data at a predetermined rate is ideal for creating awareness which enables intelligent, effective use of resources,” said Mike Arnott, senior integration engineer with Kors Engineering. “It’s easy to create accounts which restrict the data to relevant personnel while supporting an environment that encourages accountability and transparency.”

The Twitter module consists of three components --  change tracker, periodic updater and new status. With the change tracker extension, any Niagara AX point can post status updates upon a change of value. The periodic updater extension will send tweets at defined time intervals for a data point. The new status object can be used to send any status string based upon an external event trigger.

The module is available for a free trial -- limited to 10 tweets -- and a real-time demonstration of the reporting tool monitoring HVAC functions is also available at www.korsengineering.com.

“Leveraging technology which can help manufacturers work more efficiently is our goal,” said Kors Engineering president Tony Kaczmarek. “Although most users consider Twitter to be a social, not a business tool, we’ve proven how businesses can transmit practical data easily, helping them to keep informed and enable informed decision making.”
