Early Childhood Education - Reading
|
The early childhood years, the time from birth through age eight, provide an opportunity for parents to help children develop skills they will use for learning throughout their lives.
Exposing children to reading and print material can start during infancy. Read to your children early and often. Over the years they will begin to develop an understanding that letters make sounds and when combined together, letters make words.
Some activities that encourage development of the skills needed for successful reading and writing include having your child find letters on signs, giving your child an old brush of any size and a container of water to paint the walk or driveway with the water to make shapes, letters, numbers or pictures.
Squirting a little shaving cream on the inside of the bathtub and having children write letters with their finger is a fun addition to bath time.
