EMU, WSU Have New Leaders

Southfield (WWJ)  -- New presidents are set to start at Wayne State and Eastern Michigan University this summer.

The Eastern Michigan Board of Regents Wednesday morning approved Susan Martin as its new leader starting July 7th.  Martin,  who had been at the University of Michigan-Dearborn as provost and vice-chancellor of academic affairs, is EMU's first female president.

“I am thrilled to be chosen for the honor of leading this great university, which has a strong history of excellent education and a bright future,” said Martin in a statement.

Speaking live on WWJ, Martin said her first objective is the business of the university and that includes tuition.

"We need to balance the needs of students with the rate or price that we are going to charge them and try to keep tuition affordable," Martin told WWJ's Greg Bowman.  "We also need to help them get their degree in a reasonable period of time."

Wayne State University's board of governors voted unanimously Wednesday to select Jay Noren as its new president, effective Aug. 1.

Noren is the founding dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
