E-Waste and Your Child

Keeping up with the latest trends in electronics can be hectic for a parent.  But, as you’re disposing of an old cell phone, used batteries, or an un-cool, out-of-date CD player or mp3 player, make sure you’re not contributing to electronics waste, or e-waste.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2005 about 1.9 million tons of used and unwanted electronics were thrown away into landfills. These items can potentially leach toxins into your family’s air, land and water.

If your child’s electronic items are gently used, consider donating them to a reuse center or thrift store.  And, for items that cannot be reused, contact your local governmental department of solid waste to see if there is a drop off center near you that will accept your child’s items for recycling and safe disposal

For more information on electronics and e-waste, contact the Communication Technology program at (734) 487-1161.
