Driver Arrested In Fatal Bicycle Accident

A 22-year-old Wayne man is under arrest for an accident that took the life of a bicycle rider early this morning in Romulus.  Corporal Don Smith says the driver was picked up after preliminary breath tests indicated he may have been drunk when he struck the victim, a 27-year-old man from Romulus, on Ecorse near Inkster shortly after 3am.

Police are investigating other factors in the crash.  "The bicyclist was wearing all dark clothing, dark t-shirt, blue jeans," Smith said. "The bicycle had no reflectors on the black, so visibility will be an issue in this investigation."  Smith says there are no streetlights where the crash occurred.

Smith says the driver has no history of drunk driving arrests.  "We will probably hold him until he's sober.  Then we will release him pending further investigation," he said.

Police are not yet releasing the name of the victim.
