Detroit Schools: Reading, Writing, Red Ink

Detroit (WWJ)  -- The Detroit Public Schools is facing a $45-million budget shortfall, and it could put the district under state oversight.

The $45-million figure is being reported by the Detroit News.

The district, which currently has an estimated 106,000 students, needs to address the shortfall or the district could find itself in default with respect to a state plan, which calls for the elimination of a $210-million deficit.  Receivership is also a possibility for the DPS.

Superintendent Connie Calloway is expected to announce details today.  Stay with WWJ for coverage.
