Detroit (WWJ) -- Thousands of volunteers are expected to patrol the streets of Detroit during Angels' Week, October 29- 31. Angel's Night, as always, is the day before Halloween.
Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel and volunteers will be recruiting Detroit residents on October 11 and 15, to be a part of this event and encourages citizens to take part in this annual safety campaign.
The Angels' Night campaign was reported a great success in 2007. Thousands patrolled the Detroit area to make the Halloween season fun and safe.
As apart of the fire prevention effort, the Detroit Fire Department will hold an open house Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, a fire and safety awareness program. This week long program will educate students in fire prevention, fire detection, fire alarm installation and safe evacuation training.
The volunteer recruiting drive will begin at 11 a.m. on October 25 at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School. Volunteers can be involved in this campaign through many ways. The Neighborhood Patrol Program, The Adopt-A-House Program, The Porch Light Program, The Eyes and Ears Program, and The Orange Ribbon Program Campaign. Volunteers are asked to be present for every night of the campaign.
City officials also are encouraging all residents to turn on outside lights at homes and businesses from dusk until morning, report any suspicious activity by phoning 9-1-1, and to place refuse containers or bulk items at the curb before 7 am on the day of pick up.
Angels' Night continues to develop community pride and a safer environment for trick or treaters.
