Detroit (WWJ) -- Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings announced her retirement Thursday.
Detroit Police spokesman James Tate said that no one had yet been designated to replace her as Chief.
Appointed to the position of Chief of Police on November 3, 2003, Bully-Cummings served the city of Detroit for more than 30 years since joining the Detroit Police Department on July 18, 1977 at age 19.
According to a Detroit Police press release, Bully-Cummings announced her retirement to Mayor Kilpatrick earlier this week.
Bully-Cummings spoke to the press on Thursday, commenting about her commitment to the department. "For me it ends when I walk out of here today," she said.
"Throughout the entire time I've been chief my commitment has always been more than 100 percent. So, I have never, ever have given less," Bully-Cummings said.
Bully-Cummings’ retirement is effective immediately. She has agreed to assist her successor to help stabilize the transition of leadership within the Detroit Police Department if requested.
