Detroit (WWJ) -- Detroit leaders are gearing up for another Angel's Night, when thousands of residents keep an eye out for arsonists.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Florence Walton reports Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. sent a message to all residents to get involved from patrolling streets to bringing something to a neighborhood city hall or even writing a check.
"Now is your time to sign up, now is the time to go out there, get in one of these cars and patrol," Cockrel said. In past years as many as 50,000 volunteers have been involved in the anti-arson effort.
Volunteers say the battle against arson may be tougher because of the growing number of vacant homes as a result of foreclosures.
Cockrel kicked off the Angel's Night effort at Firehouse Engine 9 on Detroit's eastside. Annual volunteers and police and fire officials joined in the announcement.
The Angel's Night campaign will run from October 29-31. Click here for more information or to volunteer.
