Detroit Council Rejects Mayor's Tunnel Deal

Detroit (WWJ)  -- After weeks of wrangling, negotiating and talks, Detroit City Council voted five to three to reject the Mayor's plan to sell the Detroit side of the Windsor tunnel to raise money to fill Detroit's budget gap.

Deputy-mayor Anthony Adams said unfortunately, now that council has voted, layoffs are necessary, "We're not going to play politics with the city's budget. Unfortunately this council has chosen to take action that is not in the best interest of the city," Adams said.

Many on council criticized the Mayor for being late in handing over information about the tunnel and for putting money from the sale into this year's budget, before it was a done deal.  They also expressed a lack of trust in the Kilpatrick administration due to the text-messaging scandal.

Layoffs wouldn't take place until a 30-day notice to the union was given.
