Mackinac Island (WWJ) -- Umbrellas are in high demand as Mackinac Island prepares to welcome the 2009 Mackinac Policy Conference. A constant drizzle, wind, and temperatures in the upper 40's are making the long trek from the ferry docks to the Grand Hotel less than desirable.
At least 1,400 people have registered for the annual gathering (which typically draws 1,700). Detroit Regional Chamber officials say those numbers are being buoyed by a surge of last-minute registrations.
The conference begins in earnest Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., with a session on philanthropy.
Key speakers at this year's event are to include T. Boone Pickens founder and chairman of BP Capital Management and energy expert; and new Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who will join Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Paul Gieleghem, chairman of Macomb County Board of Commissioners and Oakland County Executive, L. Brooks Patterson on the panel to discuss the opportunities to move Michigan forward.
Ari Emanuel, founder, Endeavor Talent Agency will be the keynote speaker, addressing the business value of entrepreneurial spirit and innovation. View the full coherence agenda.
