DETROIT SHOWS IT'S IN THE RACE TO BRING ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO MARKET

If everything goes as planned, 2010 could literally be an electrifying year for the Detroit automakers.

That's when General Motors Corp. hopes to launch its innovative Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid car, which combines an electric drive train with an onboard gasoline motor to generate electricity when the batteries lose power. And as of this week, the world knows that Chrysler LLC is working on a trio of electric-powered models. Chrysler promises to put one of the vehicles on sale in the U.S. in 2010.

Last week GM gave the world its first look at the production version of the Volt at an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the company. On Tuesday, Chrysler showed reporters three electric prototypes: a Dodge sports car, a four-door Jeep Wrangler and a Chrysler minivan.

Chrysler also unveiled the Peapod (pictured above), a new small "neighborhood electric vehicle" that can go up to 30 miles on a charge. More...

If you doubt that the rush to create more fuel-efficient vehicles is a life-or-death struggle for the Detroit Three automakers, consider a report released Wednesday by J.D. Power and Associates. More new-vehicle buyers than ever cite inadequate gas mileage as a reason for choosing one car over another, the research firm finds. And, the report says, a growing number of potential car buyers are considering Asian brands. Meanwhile, the number considering domestic brands is shrinking. More...

NEWS FROM CNET

MYSPACE MUSIC TO LAUNCH: Media mogul Rupert Murdoch will officially take on Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Thursday. That's when MySpace is expected to launch MySpace Music, the music service formed by the world's second largest social network and all four of the largest recording companies, executives from the News Corp.-owned social network said Wednesday. A ROAD TO GREENER TRANSPORTATION: The route to a less polluting car looks more like a multipoint intersection than a single superhighway, a panel of experts said on Wednesday. The auto and fuels industries are in the midst of dramatic technological change, but it's still not clear how quickly which new technologies will be adopted. Also unknown is whether consumers are willing to switch from traditional car ownership to the "transportation as a service" model where people share a fleet of clean cars dispersed around a city. The EmTech 2008 conference, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, put together a panel to discuss green transportation with Tesla Motors Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel, BP chief scientist Steven Koonin, and Ryan Chin, a student at the MIT Media Lab involved in the City Car and RoboScooter projects. BMW BUILDS LUXURY HYBRID SEDAN: Following on the recent announcement by Mercedes-Benz of its mild hybrid sedan with lithium ion batteries, BMW announced its own mild hybrid sedan with lithium ion batteries. Although it may sound like cutthroat competition, it's more conspiracy, as Daimler and BMW co-developed their hybrid components. And where Mercedes-Benz announced a production car, BMW is still at the concept stage with its Concept 7-series ActiveHybrid. But in keeping with its sport aspirations, the BMW shows no compromise in power, using a twin-turbo V-8 assisted by the mild hybrid system. The twin-turbo V-8 delivers 407 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid system's electric motor, integrated into the transmission, adds 20 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.
