21ST CENTURY JOBS FUND AWARDS $30 MILLION TO 17 HIGH-TECH FIRMS: Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm Wednesday announced that 17 companies have been selected by the Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization board to share nearly $30 million from the 21st Century Jobs Fund to initially create over 1,500 new jobs in emerging high-tech sectors. “These innovative Michigan companies are poised to turn their scientific and technological innovation into high-paying jobs,” Granholm said. “We look forward to partnering with them as we work to diversify and grow our economy.” The 21st Century Jobs Fund awards were made to companies in the later stages of development ready to create jobs in the competitive-edge sectors of alternative energy, life sciences, advanced automotive, manufacturing and materials, and homeland security and defense. HR NOT FIRST STOP FOR MOST EMPLOYEES EXPERIENCING WORK PROBLEMS: Most people would rather talk to a friend or colleague than anyone in HR if they're having work-related problems, says a recent survey by Opinion Research Corporation. The Ouch Point survey, performed by the Princeton, N.J.-based market research firm, found that about 25 percent of respondents doubted the ability of HR professionals to keep information about work-related problems confidential. But U.S. workers are twice as likely to talk to someone other than the HR department about work. Only 22 percent of those surveyed said they would seek help from their HR department, 39 percent said they would talk to a friend, and 66 percent said they would speak to their manager about a work problem. U.S. HOUSE NAMES OCTOBER NATIONAL WORK & FAMILY MONTH: The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a resolution (HR 1440) declaring October as “National Work & Family Month.” The resolution, co-sponsored by Rep. STUDY: MOBILE WEB SITES NEED IMPROVEMENT: Apple's iPhone has revolutionized Web browsing on a mobile device, but some users of the breakthrough phone are still frustrated with their experience when surfing certain sites, like Yahoo. Keynote Systems, which provides testing tools to help companies improve their mobile experience, found in a study released Thursday that satisfaction rates of iPhone users using certain sites were low and only a small percentage of users clicked through on advertising. The results suggest that the usability of many mobile Web sites still needs improvement. It also suggests that advertisers might have to adjust their practices on the mobile Web. More...
