Creative Writing Techniques

Creating stories from interviews is a powerful way of engaging students to write.

Professor Jessica Alexander at
Eastern Michigan University used this technique in her recent play entitled Anywhere you want to go.

High school students in her theater group interviewed local residents and used their stories to write a play, which focused on the ups and downs of living in
Ypsilanti.

They interviewed the mayor of their city, the owner of Bombadill’s coffee shop and people riding the local busses.

You can use a similar technique with your child – they could interview an older neighbor, relative or member of their religious community and write a profile, poem or monologue.
