Council Approves 1st Step in Tunnel Sale

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Detroit City Council changed its mind Tuesday and approved the initial step to begin the process of selling its half of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel.  WWJ's Florence Walton was there as the approval was issued.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's office has pushed the sale of the tunnel, for $75-million, as a way to balance the city's budget.

The Mayor's office had told council members that as many as 1,300 city workers would be laid off if the deal wasn't approved.

Monday, council voted 5-3 against the idea.  WWJ's Florence Walton is following the developments and will have updates throughout the day.
