If your child is interested in applying to a selective university, such as the University of Michigan, you may want to help him or her get used to the idea of a college essay.
U of M has released its 2008-9 essay questions, which includes writing about diversity, about a book that has influenced you, about setbacks in your life, or an issue of local concern. It might take your student some time to even think of good ideas to start one of these essays, and it is better not to leave this until the last minute.
These short essays need to be polished, so students will need to write several drafts to find the right tone and style.
