The Economic Development Coalition of Southeast Michigan (EDCSEM) says its effort to gain more federal funding for economic development projects has gained an additional $3 million in funding coming from Washington D.C.
“By forming a coalition of the region's economic developers, we were able to travel to Washington as a group and make one request," Detroit Renaissance President Doug Rothwell said in a statement. "The delegation was impacted by our show of unity and a coordinated advocacy program."
The specific funding cited was $2 million for Automation Alley; $282,000 for Ann Arbor SPARK; $282,000 for Macomb County to launch a new business accelerator; and $500,000 for Wayne County, also to launch a new business accelerator.
The EDCSEM recently released a report that identified a total of 68 projects representing $2.28 billion in investment to the region during the first 6 months of 2007, creating more than 4,000 new jobs and retaining more than 5,400.
The coalition, convened by Detroit Renaissance in November 2006, also includes: Ann Arbor SPARK, Automation Alley, Detroit Economic Growth Corp., Detroit Regional Chamber, Detroit Regional Economic Partnership, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Detroit Renaissance, Macomb County, Oakland County, NextEnergy, TechTown, Tourism Economic Development Council and Wayne County.
