Classes Cancelled Again In Wayne-Westland District
Southfield (WWJ) -- Thousands of students in the Wayne-Westland School District will have a third day off as a result of a teacher contract dispute. Administrators announced late Tuesday afternoon that Wednesday classes for 13,000 students are cancelled.
More than 800 teachers have been on strike since Monday.
Negotiations are to resume at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in front of a mediator.
The Wayne-Westland Education Association says district negotiators have failed to address the outstanding issues, including class size and benefits. Attorneys for the district will be in Wayne County Circuit Court Thursday asking a judge to order teachers back to work.
Meanwhile, Administrative Law Judge Doyle O'Connor ruled Tuesday afternoon that the district is guilty of not bargaining in good faith with the teachers union. O'Connor determined that there was no question the district violated the law when it refused to provide relevant bargaining information to the union.

Teachers in the Troy School District also were protesting the lack of a contract Tuesday evening. Teachers were rallying ahead of a school board meeting.
Troy teachers have been working under a contract extension since April, but that extension expired at midnight Friday.
Troy Education Association, president, Roberta Masters said they're making progress, but several issues need to be resolved.
"The typical sticking points are often viewed as economic issues, which involve health care and salary, however, this is not just about economic issues. It is also about the working conditions which are also our students' learning conditions in the classroom," Masters told WWJ.
The Michigan Education Association says several area school districts are on its "critical" list. They include: Harper Woods, Woodhaven, Northville, Utica, Brighton, Redford Union and Pinckney.
