Cheeks-Kilpatrick Says Son Affecting Her Re-Election

An admission Sunday on a national TV program from Michigan Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick.  Cheeks-Kilpatrick told C-SPAN's Newsmakers program that the felony charges and scandal surrounding her son, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, have hurt her campaign.  "Absolutely my son's situation has impacted my race," Cheeks-Kilpatrick said.  "I've done polling, and yes, it has impacted."

But Cheeks-Kilpatrick says she's confident she can still win.  "I'm running on my record,"  she said.  "Half a billion dollars is what I've brought into my district in southeastern Michigan since I've been here in Congress, in appropriations for education, for housing and health care, those kind of things for my universities and for my cities."

Kilpatrick added:  "I'll have a difficult race, but it's okay."
