CAPS Program Works to Help Seniors 'Aging in Place'

"Aging in place" is the trend in elder care -- the idea that people will live better in familiar places like their own homes, rather than institutions. However, not every "place" is appropriate for aging, and the National Associate of Home Builders is trying to help.

The NAHB has established the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist program, to teach contractors the skills they need to compete in what they call the "fastest-growing segment of the residential remodeling industry -- home modifications for aging in place."

The CAPS program was developed in cooperation with the AARP.

Market research indicates most retirees or soon-to-be retirees 55 and older are happy with their current homes and communities, and don't necessarily want to move until they have to. Many have the income for remodeling, and will be looking to modify their existing homes as their physical limitations catch up to them.

Making a home safe for aging in place isn't the same for all, but generally contractors look for a master bedroom and bath on the first floor, low thresholds, lever-style door handles, adequate lighting, handrails on steps and open floor plans.

More information on the CAPS program is available at the NAHB website.
