Southfield (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police say 15 people were hurt in a Thursday afternoon accident along southbound U.S. 23 near Whitmore Lake. The injured ranged in age from infants to elderly. As of Thursday evening, 13 people remained hospitalized in fair condition, ten of them are children.
A statement from Michigan State Police say 21 members of an Amish church near Mt. Pleasant were in a 13-seat bus, made into a motor home, that was hit by a semi tractor trailer just before 1 p.m. near Barker Road. The motor home flipped.
The group was headed to a funeral in Ohio.
An investigation shows the driver of the bus was attempting to change lanes to allow a vehicle to enter the freeway from the Barker Road entrance ramp when the accident happened.
15 people inside the motor home were injured. State Police troopers said none of the injuries appeared to be serious.
Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams says all the victims were taken to University of Michigan Hospital.
Michigan State Police Trooper Randy Phare said he was not sure if its seat belts were being worn.
"It could have been a lot worse,'' he said, pointing to the truck's size and speed. He estimated the truck was traveling between 60 mph and 70 mph.
Motor vehicle laws will be researched to determine if charges will be filed against the bus driver, Phare said.
Michigan State police say three vehicles were involved in the crash. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities were urging drivers to use Whitmore Lake Road and Eight Mile Road as alternates as they worked to clear the accident. The southbound lanes of U.S. 23 re-opened around 3 p.m. Click here for the latest traffic information.
