As children are learning math, they love to practice their skills on real life problems.
Even kids just learning addition and subtraction like to see how these concepts apply to everyday situations. One way to do this and also prepare them to tackle word problems, is to do number stories.
The topic of math stories can be simple, such as how many balloons you have left if you start with four and three of them popped. Older kids can tackle more difficult problems using multiplication, division and geometry.
The key is to build the number story around objects close at hand that you and your child can count together to check your work.
