Better Communication For Wayne County Sheriff Dpt.

Detroit (WWJ)  -- He certainly would have liked having this new communications system in place back during the blackout of 2003. But, better late than never.

Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans announced Wednesday that his department is entering the 21st century with a new 2-million dollar, state-of-the-art communications system.

"We're going to an 800 Megahertz system which is being switched over as we speak; which is a digital system is getting away from the old analog system that we'd had since all of my time and maybe before" Evans told WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting.

"And it's significant that now the three largest police departments and a number of others in the state of Michigan will be on the same system. So, the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police and now the Wayne County Sheriff's office along with a number of other departments will be able to do that," he said.

Being able to talk on the same frequency is a big help says Evans in emergencies and regarding issues of Homeland Security.
