Senator Obama Arrives In Israel

Detroit (AP)  -- Barack Obama is in Jerusalem, where he says if he makes it into the White House, he plans to continue the tradition of strong ties between Israel and the U.S.

The Democratic presidential contender, who was in Jordan earlier today, is vowing to work for a breakthrough in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations ``starting from the minute'' he's sworn into office. Still, Obama acknowledges it's unrealistic to expect the U.S. president alone can ``suddenly snap his fingers and bring about peace.''

Acknowledging a bulldozer attack by a Palestinian in downtown Jerusalem earlier today, Obama vowed ``to work diligently, urgently and in a unified way to defeat terrorism.''

He's expected to meet with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on the West Bank tomorrow. And he'll visit an Israeli city often bombarded by Palestinian militant rocket fire.

The next stop on his weeklong foreign trek is Europe.
