Detroit (WWJ) -- A resolution from outgoing Detroit City Councilwoman Alberta Tinsley-Talabi that would forbid council members from carrying guns into the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building, where council meets, failed Friday for lack of support.
Councilman Kwame Kenyatta, who has a gun permit, said it wasn't necessary.
"First of all, it's against the CCW [Carrying Concealed Weapon] law anyway to carry within a municipal building," Kenyatta said. "Plus, the rule of this building... is right there on the front door...I don't carry in this building," he said.
Earlier this month, Kenyatta, Charles Pugh, James Tate and Gary Brown have said they are usually armed. And Rev. Andre Spivey, pastor of St. Paul AME, said he soon planned to get his concealed weapon permit.
The nine-person council has a full-time, nine-officer police unit. Members can also request individual security when they feel threatened.
