Southfield (WWJ) -- Two armed robbery suspects are in police custody after crashing their car while trying to flee police Tuesday afternoon.
Farmington Hills police say they were not chasing the vehicle when it crashed on Inkster Road at Eight Mile Road. A statement from police say officers spotted a stolen vehicle wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Detroit. When officers converged on the car near Nine Mile and Inkster, the driver sped off at a high rate of speed.
The driver ran a red light and lost control of the car when he tried to avoid hitting Stop Sticks at Eight Mile Road. The car crashed into a utility pole and started on fire.
The 17-year old robbery suspect and a juvenile were rescued from the burning vehicle by police. The suspects were taken to the hospital for treatment. Two officers also sustained minor injuries during the rescue.
Criminal charges are pending.
Police closed Inkster Road between Eight Mile and Grand River because the pole and power lines were knocked down.
