Ann Arbor Firm Training Laid Off Auto Enginees In Defense Tech

Ann Arbor-based Universal Parametrics Inc. announced a free auto worker retraining boot camp and career fair for Aug. 4-8 at its headquarters.

The company says it hopes to convert downsized auto designers and engineers in the auto industry into those with skills applicable in the defense industry, where demand is rising.

During the week-long event, select candidates will be cross-trained in the computer aided design software Pro/Engineer Wildfire, which is the U.S. government defense standard, and is also widely used in agriculture, consumer and medical products.

“Right now, military projects are where it’s at, but defense contractors such as BAE Systems in Sterling Heights and General Dynamics in Warren can’t hire enough people fast enough, and you can’t get through the front door without knowing Pro/Engineer first," Universal Parametricts vice president Steve Frey said.

Space for the event is limited. To qualify for the free training, candidates must:

* Be currently unemployed and available for immediate work anywhere in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw and Monroe counties.

* Have a minimum of two years experience using AutoCAD, Catia, Solidworks, Unigraphics, SDRC Ideas or Pro/Engineer.

* Provide an up-to-date resume, including salary requirements and contact information for last supervisor (references will be checked).

* A attend all five days of training in Ann Arbor.

In addition to the training program, students will participate in discussions about trends in the design and engineering industry, and employment opportunities at Universal Parametrics. The application deadline for the Boot Camp is July 30, and candidates must apply on-line at www.parametrics.com/bootcamp.
