Mayor Kilpatrick Appoints Legal Council

Detroit (WWJ)  -- There were some new developments in the text message scandal involving Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former Chief of Staff.  Tuesday, the mayor's office announced that Kilpatrick has appointed the city's General Counsel Sharon McPhail and local attorney James Thomas as his legal counsel for the inquiry by Governor Jennifer Granholm.

The governor has been asked by Detroit City Council  to remove Mayor Kilpatrick from office because misconduct in a whistle-blowers' settlement and charges claiming he lied under oath about his alleged affair with Christine Beatty.

On Wednesday, Gov. Granholm's office took a preliminary step in its review of the Council's request. Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd said, ``We sent a letter asking the parties to name a legal representative that we can work with. It's part of the process as we prepare to begin our review.''

The governor has said she wants to allow the criminal process to play out, so it's unclear if she will move to oust Kilpatrick, a fellow Democrat.

A Kilpatrick spokesman accused the council of ``playing politics.''
