Tech Tour Day Eight: Strong Growth In Lansing I've long known that the state capital is a hotbed of technology development. You've got several major software companies, life insurers, state government itself and Michigan State University within a few miles, and that's more than enough critical mass. I got more confirmation of that knowledge in Lansing Wednesday on Day Eight, the final day of the Great Lakes IT Report's Spring Tech Tour.
Tech Tour Day Seven: A Wide Sweep Of Tech In Flint WWJ Technology Editor, Matt Roush, swing by one Michigan city with a startup offering in-car computers, another offering fuel cells you can buy as a power backup, another offering new chemistry for painting plastics with, another offering super-secure USB drives and mini Flash media players; and a list of 50 other potential tech companies for future growth. Any guesses?
Tech Tour Day Five: Back Downstate, With A Quick Phone Update On Sunday I enjoyed a ride thorugh mostly sunny weather across the Upper Peninsula and back downstate. Along the way, in Gaylord, I met with Ron Siegel, general manager of the Curran-based Allband Communications Cooperative, for an update on the rural nonprofit phone company.
Tech Tour Day Four In Marquette: Tech Yes, Spring No May in the central Upper Peninsula can still be late winter, and I got a taste of that Saturday when the Great Lakes IT Report's Allegedly Spring Tech Tour 2009 hit Marquette. While snowflakes flew by outside in the 34-degree temperatures, I talked to online entrepreneurs making a serious go of it in the North Woods.
Tech Tour Day Three: TC Tech Goes Global Traverse City is an absolute jewel, a gorgeous resort town nestled amid verdant hills and azure bays. But it's also increasingly a high-tech hotbed whose entrepreneurs' work is appreciated worldwide. I met with some of those folks Friday when the Great Lakes IT Report's Spring Tech Tour 2009 hit the City by the Bays.
Tech Tour Day Two: A High Tech Road Trip Along The West Shore So here's the deal: Five springs I've done this Tech Tour, and when it comes to West Michigan I've always visited Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. But out along Lake Michigan like a string of pearls are a host of smaller cities, all with their own technology industry jewels. Thursday, I finally got a chance to visit them, as the Great Lakes IT Report's Spring Tech Tour 2009 visited the West Shore, from Covert up to Manistee.
Tech Tour Day Zero: Southfield to Kalamazoo Greetings from Kalamazoo, where the Great Lakes IT Report's Spring Tech Tour 2009 kicks off this morning. For the fifth straight spring, I'll be driving all over Michigan looking for the latest and greatest in the high-tech economy that's going to turn this state around.
