Tech Tour Day Eight: Ferris State Has Top Notch Tech
I've never included Ferris State University on my fall Tech Tour of Michigan's high-tech universities. Boy, was I missing out. Ferris State sent me on a whirlwind tour of the Big Rapids school Tuesday, with seven stops in seven hours starting at 7 a.m. And while I'm bushed right now, I'm also charged up by the exciting technologies and programs I saw -- and how they can help Michigan transform its economy.
Tech Tour Day Nine: Wonders At Western
How about an aviation school that saves lives in operating rooms? Or a first-of-its-kind remote human anatomy course for occupational therapy students? Or novel sensors that detect minute quantities of prostate cancer antigen with acoustics, not chemistry? Welcome to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, where you practically trip over cool technology around every corner.
Tech Tour Day Seven: High Tech Is Central To CMU's Mission
When most people think of Central Michigan University, they think of a big liberal arts school in rural mid-Michigan with a strong teaching component. Well, they're right, but it's also a whole lot more. In six stops around Mt. Pleasant Monday, I learned that CMU is a global leader in several critical technologies and is deeply involved into bringing higher tech to driving, journalism and health care.
Pasty.Net Moving To WiMax
I missed one of my favorite UP entrepreneurs, Charlie Hopper of Pasty.net, during my weekend Tech Tour visit -- he happened to be downstate in Lansing and Detroit. But nevertheless, Hopper made news. In an e-mail, he told me that the Michigan Economic Development Corp. has approved Pasty.net's Marquette County wireless project.
Tech Tour Day Five: Way Cool Tech Way Up North
One of my favorite things about Tech Tour is getting to venture north of the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula. Especially since its population of roughly 320,000 is so enterprising and tech-savvy. Once again a visit to the Keweenaw country and Michigan Technological University proved both fun and fascinating.
Tech Tour Day Three: WiMax World Gets Real
Wednesday's opening day of the WiMax World 2008 conference in Chicago covered the technological promise of WiMax wireless high-speed Internet access. Thursday's second day covered the real-world applications -- places where WiMax is already providing mobile high-speed service at low rates.

A Spin Around The WiMax Show Floor
Anyone who doubts the energy and buzz -- and the global nature -- of the new market in WiMax wireless Internet communications should spend a while on the show floor at WiMax World 2008 this week in Chicago.

Coming Soon To An Internet Near You: WiMax
WiMax is the next generation of the Internet -- and it's finally here and growing fast.  That was the assessment of morning speakers on the opening day of WiMax World 2008 at Chicago's McCormick Place. Thousands of industry participants, vendors and the media gathered in a packed Skyline Ballroom to hear from several industry leaders in the general session portion of Wednesday's program.
Greetings From Chicago As Fall Tech Tour 2008 Begins
Your humble narrator is now comfortably ensconced at the super cool Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago, awaiting the start of the WiMax World conference Wednesday and Thursday as the Great Lakes IT Report's Fall Tech Tour 2008 gets under way.
2008 Fall GLITR Tech Tour
Yahoo! WWJ Newsradio 950 Technology Editor, Matt Roush, here. The frost is on the proverbial punkin, the days are getting shorter and there's  a bit of a nip to the air -- so it must be time once again for your humble narrator to hit  the highway for the Great Lakes IT Report's annual Fall Tech Tour.

Since everyone in academe has just headed back to school, this year's fall tour, like  last year's, will focus on university technology transfer -- using the amazing research  now going on at the state's higher education institutions to build the next Michigan,  one university spinout at a time.  Also like last year, I'm starting the tech tour not in Michigan, but in Chicago. I'll be  covering the WiMax World conference in Chicago Oct. 1 and 2, reporting on the future of wireless Internet communications.

Then I'll be driving north, and north (and even farther north) on Friday, Oct. 3, and the  "real" Tech Tour begins.

Where I'm headed.
