2008 Eastern Market Flower Day

On May 18, WWJ will help sponsor the 42nd annual Flower Day.  This event will take place at Eastern Market, the largest historic public market district in the United States.  Founded in 1966, Flower Day was a way for the non-profit Metropolitan Detroit Flower Growers Association (MDFGA) to solve the problem of high delivery costs for shipping and selling their products outside of Detroit.  In turn, there was an increased public awareness of the great local availability of fresh, homegrown bedding flowers.  Today, there is an array of options for shoppers to choose from.  Available at the market for purchase are roses, geraniums, marigolds, lilies, gladiolas, and hostas, annuals, perennials, foliage, shrubbery, trees, exotics, tropical plants, flats, hanging baskets and much more.

WWJ will be reporting before and after the event. We'll also provide on-site radio announcements for the 8th annual  wacky wagon contest.  This contest gives shoppers the opportunity to enter their decorated wagons for a chance to win prizes in three different categories: most entertaining, most creative, and best representation of the spirit of Flower day and will be taking place between 7 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

From 7a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be several activities aside from the main event.  The Eastern Market Food Court  will host over 20 local restaurants and vendors providing such culinary cuisines as pizza, fresh chef's salads, freshly grilled Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, and much more.  There will be a chance on both Saturday and Flower Day Sunday for famalies to enjoy colorful performances, clowns, train rides, a farm animal corral and crafts for kids of all ages at the Children's Merry Market Land.  There will also be performances from dancers, mimes, artists, clowns, magicians, musicians, puppeteers, jugglers, acrobats, tumblers, and living statues.  Musical entertainment taking place at various stages will include award winning blues man Luther "Badman" Keith, Detroit's "Best Soca Band" Universal Sounds and Eastern Market's own legendary 3 of 9-70's Rock and Blues.

Deck out your wagon in the "wackiest" ways, and you can be a part of the Eastern Market Flower Day "Wacky Wagon" contest.  Bring your wagon by the WWJ booth, and you could win great prizes!
